My preliminary Cisco router setup

As a potential engineer one of the many basic skills you’ll need to master in your career is setting up a newly purchased router. Surprisingly I know a lot of Engineers that have worked in NOC’s (Network Operations Centers) for years, troubleshooting all sorts Cisco devices and various issues and never really having to configure anything. This is truly one of the down sizes of working in a large company; you tend to get pigeon-toed into doing on particular thing all the time.

Two skills are needed to know from memory.

• Basic setup a router or switch

• Basic password recovery for a router or switch

This article will be focus on the setup process. I’ ll be using the GNS3 emulator, configuring a Cisco 2691.

I chose the 2691 because of light memory footprint and the fact I can **ADD250X250**I find a current IOS 12.4 for it. I used this router mostly in all of my GNS3 labs, because of the FA and multiple WIC interfaces and you can also use the NM-16ESW for added switch functions. For this exercise I have the c2691-entservicesk9-mz.124-25c.bin unpacked and loaded.

Below is a copy of my basic config for each router I setup, I’ve also included an Objective router that you can use to configure on your own.  Practice this a few times until you feel comfortable with setting up a Cisco router.

    Please give me “c2691-entservicesk9-mz.124-25c.bin.unpacked” IOS version..
    I searched it over the net… but I can’t get it….
